I came across this quote today, and it struck me how well it strikes a chord with Gillian’s ideas:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our choice lies our growth and our freedom.”

(Viktor Frankl,Austrian neurologist, psychologist and Holocaust survivor)

I wonder if this depends on what is meant by “stimulus” and “response”? I don’t have a clue what was intended by Frankl.

If stimulus is the addictive desire and the response is overeating, then, yes I agree.

But if stimulus is a cue (bell ringing) and the response is an addictive desire, then no, I don’t think that’s a choice we’re making and it doesn’t work to suggest we could or should choose otherwise.

There have been many interpretations of that quote, so wanted to clarify.
